My Students

I teach in a Title I school in Nebraska where 85% of my students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. Even though we live in the heart of America we live in a community filled with diversity. 34% of our population is foreign born. What this means for my classroom is that the majority of my students fit one of two molds. One is that they are the first child in their family to receive any type of formal education, and two that they go home to a family that speaks little to no English. And to be honest, several of my students fit both of these molds. Regardless of the curriculum, my students are put to a daily test to just communicate with their parents and teacher.

Another factor that my students face is poverty.

With a large immigrant population, many households are struggling to make ends meet. Our poverty rate is 20.4% which is almost double the state average. I want my classroom to be a warm and inviting place for my students.

My Project

I have a few STEM bins already, but not enough materials to support my classroom. With this project I will be able engage all my students in various STEM activities. I have selected several IQ puzzles made my SmartGames, where students work to fit puzzle pieces in a set area, in a various arrangements. This form of brain activity builds determination, perseverance, and divergent thinkers. Along with those activities, I have added white boards to my supply list so students can use them to explain what they have created or draw out their process without using paper. I have also asked for magnetic tiles to promote engineering skills through STEM activities.

Building critical thinking and problem solving skills is so important with children today.

We live in an age where information and resources are everywhere. You don't necessarily have to work hard to solve a problem or to get an answer... you just have to have access to the internet. The games and STEM activities I have selected are geared towards building problem solving strategies, perseverance, and determination via games and activities.
