Enrich. Flexible. Choice. Productivity. Accommodations. Independence. Increased Focus. These are the things that come to mind when I think about bringing flexible seating into my classroom. Currently, my students sit in desks and during independent work they have a few flexible seating options, such as lowered tables, foam knee pads, and clipboards. However, I am looking at expanding the options of flexible seating in my classroom. My classroom philosophy is to create a welcoming and nurturing classroom environment where students are encourage to make their own decision and take responsibility of their learning. I want my students to be able to make choices to better their learning, and know that those choices directly affect their success. In the limited forms of flexible seating I am currently using in my classroom, I have seen a change in student productivity and empowerment. It's almost magical that a change, such as allowing student's the freedom to sit where they want, has on them. Powerful education doesn't just come from a strong curriculum, it comes from a powerful teacher that is empowered by her students' successes. Sitting behind a desk doesn't always equal learning, it's time to give our students the choice to learn comfortably.
