Build a Thinking Classroom Transformation with Vertical Whiteboards!

Help me give my students a new way of learning, by transforming our classroom environment into a Building Thinking Classroom! Help my students shift their focus from passive listening to active thinking.

My Project

Transforming my classroom into a Building Thinking Classroom requires students to complete math tasks in a small group at vertical whiteboards. The Building Thinking Classroom framework encourages active participation through collaborative problem-solving, often using vertical non-permanent surfaces like whiteboards. This can make learning more dynamic and engaging for students. My classroom will need vertical whiteboards, dry erase markers, and whiteboard cleaner to help our Building Thinking Classroom run smoothly. Currently we are out of whiteboard spray and students use small individual whiteboards on their desks or table tents that get smashed down while students work at their "boards."

By minimizing direct instruction from a math book and maximizing student-driven exploration at vertical whiteboards, students become more confident in their ability to learn.

By having my students stand up to work at vertical whiteboards, I am shifting the focus from passive listening to active thinking. My students will become more invested in the learning process. This framework encourages my students to take ownership of their learning, developing independence and self-reliance.

The use of Vertical Whiteboards and random grouping of students, removes some of the social pressures that exist in traditional classroom settings. This will allow my students to feel more comfortable with taking risks, and showing their thinking. My students will learn to communicate their ideas, listen to one another, rely on each other, and build confidence in their math skills together.
