Hello everyone! I work at a low income public school in the Bronx, New York. We are an extremely fun, and energetic group of students. Many of the students live below the poverty line and unfortunately do not read a lot at home due to lack of resources. Therefore, many students read below grade level and go through school with an increasing gap in reading. We are fortunate enough to have students from all over the world attend our school. More than 50% of our students live in poverty and do not have access to the necessary resources like books or a library. This means that a majority-poor student population in public schools, a growing number of children start kindergarten already trailing their more privileged peers and rarely, if ever, catch up. They are less likely to have support at home, are less frequently exposed to enriching activities outside of school, and are more likely to drop out and never attend college. Your donation of books can help us learn important strategies necessary to increase reading levels and be prepared to be successful readers and leaders in the twenty first century.
This leveled book set will help our students become stronger, more confident readers. Every child in our school is assigned a just right reading level which is an alphabet letter that corresponds to certain books that they are able to read independently. These book sets will help the students get stronger at their reading level and reach new levels in reading. This particular book set will be used during small group reading lessons as well as in student- led book clubs. Our hope is that students are building a love and passion for reading and get lost in these excellent books and crave more books similar to them.
The literacy skills that our students will gain from using these books will help them become active participants in their classes and individuals who genuinely enjoy reading in school and at home.
Setting up book clubs will help many students interact with each other around texts. It greatly enhances their comprehension and makes it so much more enjoyable. Adults know that (we join book clubs and spend hours on Goodreads) so let's help kids have this experience too. It is very important to lay down a strong reading foundation for our early learners and part of that means making books a central part of their school life.
