Help me give my students what they need to become interested and devoted readers, but also critical thinkers and lovers of the learning process. Help me give them a world they were never told they had access to.
Our school serves students who often come from lower income homes where, unfortunately, reading at a young age was not made a priority in lieu of other, more survival focused, needs of the household. Therefore, my students are coming to our school at a disadvantage of their more affluent neighbors (parts of Glendale are wealthy, but the students we serve often come from surrounding communities left out of economic progress/success zones). I have built a modest classroom library using donated books, and while I've filled in some of the gaps of my library from my own personal resources, there is still a long way to go.
Our students are willing learners without access to the resources they need to reach their full potential.
The majority of the students we serve do not have access to quality books, and the English department at my school is attempting a cross grade level program to inspire these students to develop a love of reading through access to quality books. The issue is that our resources are limited.
We hope to create a generous library of resources with a wide variety of texts to give students a chance to learn how to love learning.
The other English teachers and myself have agreed, for the first time, to build a unified front against illiteracy and low interest in reading. We are working with each other to start a reading campaign from day 1 to give students access to high quality books in a variety of genres and reading levels to promote a culture of reading, stories, and literature.
Students need to feel like they belong to the world, and reading is a way to access a world many of these students never knew they had access to because of their background.
We hope to give them a way towards the larger world, and a love of literature.
