Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a small city, which has high poverty and crime rates. Most of my students are from Puerto Rico; some arrived a couple of years ago but many have come within the last year after they were displaced by the hurricane. They are in ninth grade and are engaging in a rigorous college- and career-preparatory program in the hopes that they can become the future leaders of this community.
Research has shown that second language acquisition is much easier when students are literate in their first languages; thus, my emphasis on building both native language literacy and English literacy.
I want my students to be able to learn from the written word and to be educated consumers of information.
My Project
Numerous studies have shown the importance of being surrounded by physical books. Simply having books around ensures that children and teens will read more and thus develop a greater vocabulary, build strong literacy skills, learn about media literacy, and become exposed to new ideas.
It is important for me to build a classroom library for my English Language Learner students.
With your support, I will be buying bookshelves to hold the books as well as numerous Spanish books designed to meet students with varied interests and reading levels. I can't wait to see my students' faces when they see these books!
