My ELA students are imaginative and fun-loving kids. They are hard-working students who are held to high expectations. They want to succeed and try their best every day. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community. All are emerging readers, and many are ESL learners.
Many of my students face numerous challenges in their lives including hunger, safety, and unstable living situations.
Despite the hardships they are facing at home, they show up at school excited and ready to learn! The desire to learn and love to have fun while they do, in a safe and exciting place, that is my classroom.
My Project
My students love to read and learn about life science topics—especially the creepy crawly things! They want to learn about each insect's diet, appearance, life cycle, behavior, predators, and habitat. Having a large collection of insect books would help them explore ideas such as what is the same about all insects. What makes an insect? Do all insects have wings? Do insects have predators? Is a spider an insect? Is a spider monkey a spider or a monkey, and is it an insect too?
I want my reading students to get excited about the natural world and inspire them to explore it!
Many students are afraid of all insects. In providing them information about insects, they will come to know them as helpers, pollinators, and decomposers. Armed with this knowledge they will not be afraid to go and explore their backyard and observe these critters in their natural habitats, Please help us purchase non-fiction books about insects at my students' independent reading levels. They will be used during silent reading time to build upon their science knowledge.
