I have fifteen students with special needs in first, second, and third grades. The students in my classroom have either intellectually disabilities, autism, or multiple disabilities.
My students are learning a variety of skills including; numbers, shapes, colors, letters, reading, and addition.
We have had a great year and many of my students have shown great progress. Due to their disabilities, my students attend a summer program to help decrease the loss of progress they gained during the year. I am teaching this year to help ensure that they get the full benefits of the summer program.
My Project
For our summer program, I will have the same students during the summer that I had during the school year. In an effort to keep them engaged I am creating a new unit with many exciting ways to learn science, math, and reading. During the school year we have learned about many aspects of animal life. We have learned how they change in a unit on life cycles, we have learned about their needs, and we have learned about the different habitats they live in. I have found that animals are a great tool to introduce a variety of lessons and make them engaging for students. Bugs are one topic that we have yet to cover and I am focusing a unit on why we have bugs.
We will be reading the Grouchy Lady bug then reading a reader I already have on the book and how it compares to facts about lady bugs.
When working with students with special needs, it is important to have hands-on manipulatives so I am requesting a giant bug collection and and shake and reveal science cards to provide my students with hands-on learning opportunities. We will also be playing The Ladybug game to help my students with their counting.
