GRIT...if you ask any one of my 5th graders what I hope they will learn this year, it is just that, GRIT. The ability to persevere when challenged, continue to try even after failing over and over, and embracing mistakes. These kids do that, and more, each and every day.
In our classroom, we don't let hard work stand in our way, we embrace it.
We know that making mistakes is part of our journey. These 28 fabulous 5th graders come from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds each facing numerous challenges each day. Somehow, they are able to leave everything else at the door, and impress me every day.
I am so proud of these hard hard-working kids, I can't wait to see what creations, discoveries, and inventions are in store in their future.
My Project
Giving students the opportunity to engage in hands on science projects is the best way to get them excited about science. The possibilities for hands-on science with 3D printing technology in the classroom are endless. With the 3D printer filament and bug encyclopedia from this project, students will apply what they have learned in our ecosystems unit to create a new bug species that will adapt to each group's unique habitat.
By supporting this project, you will be helping our future engineers learn about environmental science and how important even the smallest creatures, such as bugs, are in an ecosystem.
After learning about ecosystems, food chains, food webs, how bugs are structured, and learning about various bug adaptations, students will develop their own bug that is able to adapt to a given environment. After completing their research, students will draw a model of their bug with its unique adaptations. Students will then use CAD software to digitize and make their drawings into a 3D model. They will use the 3D printer filament from this project to print their 3D designs. Students will then present their new bug species to the director of the entomology center to be considered for placement in a new exhibit. Thanks to this project students will be learning through all 3 dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards and will be inspired to pursue careers in engineering and environmental science.
