Buddy Books

My students need three sets of Partner Readers in order to share with another grade level.

I currently am teaching in a Title One School in South Carolina with the majority of students receiving free or reduced lunch. The students in my first grade class will be looping up with me next year. Knowing the students that I am teaching next year gives me great insight about the reading levels. I feel that Buddy Books would greatly benefit my students through working with grade levels both above and below their reading levels.

Through this project, each of the students in my classroom and students within another classroom will be affected. Research shows that reading aloud builds fluency and comprehension. Proper pacing will be modeled by the students in upper grade levels who read with the students in my first grade class. The partner readers chosen are simple and easy reading texts that will benefit both classes. The goal of this proposal is to increase proficiency in comprehension, vocabulary development, print awareness, fluency, decoding, and sight word recognition.

To complete this experience I need partner readers that will promote comprehension and build self-esteem through fluency. The Buddy Books project will supplement the ELA program already in place. Partner Readers provide thirty extra minutes of reading skills each week that research indicates is essential.

In my classroom I feel students have a difficult time with both fluency and comprehension. With 24.4% of the students in our SC school scoring below basic in ELA on PACT testing, I find a need to emphasize reading across grade levels and target my students beginning at an early age. Your help is vital in empowering great readers of the future.
