Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in a predominantly low-income, bilingual public school. Our urban school serves a diverse population of students, most of whom are English language learners.
Noting the shortage of afterschool clubs for students at our school, a fellow teacher and I are planning a drama club for this year. We hope to introduce children to elements of theater through games, improvisational activities, and short skits (The BFG: A Series of Plays) during the first half of the year. Then, in the spring, we hope to use these skills to put on a full-scale production of James and the Giant Peach.
Having enthusiastically participated in many children's theater productions while growing up, I am unashamedly biased about the importance of acting experience for children. Not only do plays provide excellent potential for developing reading fluency and literary analysis skills through in-depth work with one story, they also build children's self-esteem. Each of these benefits is especially important for English language learners, who often suffer from a lack of practice with oral communication. Our productions will give these students a sense of ownership of what they read. The plays will also provide more opportunities for parents and community members to get involved and visit the school; who doesn't want to see her/his child on stage? Given their chance to perform loudly, clearly, and with confidence, children will develop positive attitudes toward reading and speaking.
Through the donation of scripts for our fall activities and spring production, you will make it possible for our students and community to experience the joys of theater.
