Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember first learning to read? The magic of stringing sounds together and actually beginning to read is wondrous. To help that happen, my students need quality books at their reading level that they can practice their emergent reading skills with and dry erase boards to write with.
My students are 5 year old children in an urban public school.
Almost every one of my students lives in poverty. They don't have the benefits so many children do. With tightening school budgets, our classroom gets no money to spend on books for our classroom library. While the children adore books, our classroom library lacks enough books for them to read at their current reading levels. Since I'm new to Kindergarten, I don't have enough books purchased out of my own pocket for kindergarteners' independent reading levels.
My Project
This project will bolster our classroom library by including high quality fiction and nonfiction books at levels A-D, intended for Kindergarten - beginning first grade level. Many of my students have begun to understand that letter sounds strung together are the code used for making words. They're excited to try out this new found discovery. Sadly, I'm scrambling to find enough books for our classroom library for their reading level. These books and the bins they come in will be perfect for our classroom. The books are well written and are a great mix of genres. Furthermore, we have a very small amount of space and the skinny bins used to store these books will actually fit in our tiny accommodations!
Finally, I'm asking for dry erase boards and a caddy to organize them. My students love using these during whole group time, stations, Guided Reading, and play time to exercise their newly acquired writing skills. We don't have many though. This project would provide enough!
Helping children unlock the magic of reading is helping them begin a wondrous journey that can lift them out of poverty.
It is through books that children can discover ideas and possibilities they may not be exposed to in their current environments. My students all tested low during our initial testing but are beginning to gain momentum. They now need materials to practice their emerging reading skills with! These books and dry erase boards every single day to boost literacy skills.
