This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you have ever been in a film photography class, you surely remember the satisfaction and pride that comes with shooting, developing your own roll of black and white film. My students have yet to discover the magical world where art and chemistry meet, but I am hoping to change that with a new darkroom!

My students are the most thoughtful, curious, and hard-working humans I have ever met.

Eighty percent of them are in the free or reduced lunch program and 90% of them will be first generation college students. They attend a public, charter school in Texas and 100% of them will get into a 4-year college or university.

My Project

The other day as I was speaking to my art class about film cameras, one student raised his hand, and very politely said, "Mrs. R... I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by 'film' camera." Additionally, a few months earlier, one student had brought her father's old Minolta SRT10 and asked me to teach her how to use it. The combination of these two events led me to start a a film photography club. Students have signed up in droves! Even though student interest is high, funds are low. Film photography is an expensive hobby, so I'm turning to the donors of Donors Choose to help! We have had several cameras donated, but we are looking for more film so that we can start some more projects. My students need film and film storage sheets for their black and white film photography class.

I am requesting several rolls of film and archival sheets to keep students' exposures safe.

So many of my students have never created anything expect at the touch of a keyboard and a mouse. Computer skills are no doubt essential to success in this modern age, I am confident that the patience and precision required to develop black and white film and photographic prints will engender self-efficacy, pride, and curiosity that will impact students for a lifetime.
