This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am fortunate enough to teach really amazing kids. They are kind, hard working, and truly enjoy learning. The students and I have created a community of learners by getting to know each other through writing and math activities. The students value the diversity in our classroom. My students also understand the power of hard work and a positive growth mindset.
Learning is a lifelong skill.
My students are curious about the world around them. They ask good questions, set a path for knowledge, and then engage in collaborative learning with peers.
My Project
In my class, I use historical fiction novels to teach both reading skills and history content. This year I would like to include the conversation of how colonists and Native Americans interacted. This book will prompt discussions about the treatment of Natives by the Colonists. Our recent theme of survival will be continued in this novel too.
History comes alive through stories.
As the students empathize with the young Native and colonists characters, they will gather a clearer understanding of our country's beginnings. The book will help build vocabulary and offer an example of what good writing sounds like. Each student will be more motivated and interested with a personal copy in their hands.
More than half of students from low‑income households
