Our library serves a diverse, rural population of students in grades 9-12 who are eager to learn about the larger world that they live in. Our student population is 69% economically disadvantaged.
Our goal in the school library is to improve our game and activity offerings so that more students can come together to interact with each other and challenging games to build bonds and form intellectual development.
We know they are eager for the opportunity. We also know that it is through engaging educational and social programs that our students will learn, grow, thrive, and head out into the world as informed and connected citizens who will contribute to their world in a positive way.
My Project
Our students have expressed interest in starting a Chess and Scrabble Club. They would like to meet once a week in the library after school, and we only have two chess sets.
With the high interest in the club, the students are requesting three more chess sets and two Scrabble boards so that multiple games and learning sessions can occur at meetings.
Many of these students do not belong to any other clubs on campus. This club will give them an opportunity to engage with their peers in a meaningful way and to connect with each other on an intellectual level.
