Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our kindergarten students are energetic, imaginative and creative 5 and 6-year-olds. They arrive at school eager to learn and ready for the challenges of the day!
We teach in an urban elementary school in which all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Since our students reside in a city enviornement, exposure to nature is limited. We want to provide opportunities for channeling their energy for exploration by observing the life cycle of a butterfly in a safe environment in the classroom. Hands-on science activities are one way to increase learning through the use of science to build understanding and to create a clearer picture of our surrounding world.
My Project
My project involves using four classroom butterfly kits to share with three other kindergarten classrooms to explore the real world application of science.
This project involves watching the lifecycle of a butterfly from larvae, to caterpillar, to pupa, and finally to butterfly.
Each classroom butterfly kit contains 33 larvae and food to last from metamorphosis to chrysalis providing each student to work hands-on with living butterflies. A butterfly sanctuary is included to observe the entire process. Visual, intriguing and engaging hands-on science activities are one way to increase learning and reading development through science activities. These experiences provide active participation and engagement within a real world application.
