Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The opportunity to become bilingual is one of the greatest gifts a child can receive. This year, our school is becoming the first in the district to offer this life-changing opportunity. We are starting with our kindergarten families this fall by opening a dual immersion program where instruction will be fifty percent in Spanish and fifty percent in English.
We are excited to help our students flourish as they develop global perspectives, compassion-filled connections and double the literacy skills!
Our program has been designed to meet the needs of the diverse learners in our community. We are addressing the fact that though over eighty-five percent of our students are of Hispanic or Latino descent and very few of them are able to read, write and speak academic Spanish. In addition, with nearly ninety percent of students coming from socioeconomically disadvantaged homes, We want to close the achievement gap before it starts by utilizing this research-proven approach.
My Project
As all second-language learners know, the process of becoming bilingual is both extremely challenging and wonderfully rewarding. In order to be successful, our students must persevere and develop a deep love of learning that intrinsically motivates them to achieve.

With beloved children's books (such as The Rainbow Fish by Marco Pfister in Spanish) to be inspired by, lap desks to make writing more fun, a creative LEGO brick set to develop engineering skills and a wireless microphone to find their voice with. Our kindergartners will discover that learning is exciting!
