My 7th grade art student are a wonderful group of children.

They come from many different cultural backgrounds including: Ukrainian, Korean, African American, Hispanic, and Filipino. Over 40% of our school's students receive free/reduced breakfast and lunches. They are creative and eager to learn about the arts. All they need is the supplies for a successful year.

My Project

Over the course of the year, I plan to take my student on a journey through art history. We will observe and practice artistic movements including: impressionism, pointillism, cubism, art deco, pop art, 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional illustrations. With the supplies, such as acrylic paints, watercolors, graphite pens, and markers, students will be able to practice all the above mentioned and become familiar with many different types of mediums.

Up until 2 years ago, we had no fine arts program at our school.

I began teaching art as an elective course because I felt it was an important part of the education process. On a physical level, art helps students improve fine motor skills. Mentally art, at it's core, teaches innovation and creativity. These are two key elements that many employers desire. For me, personally, arts played a major roll in my education and I feel that it is one of the primary reasons for my successes in life.
