This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

An essential part of middle school is learning responsibility, time management and social skills. Many of our students are responsible for getting to school on their own every morning. For a variety of reasons, has proved to be difficult for a portion of our students.

My school is a public middle school located in the inner city.

In our school 85.8% or 303 of our 353 students receive free lunch. My students come from diverse backgrounds: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Ecuador, Ghana, Liberia, Bangladesh,... Many are the first in their families born in the United States, some are new arrivals to the States. What they have in common is they attend a high-performing public middle school, located in the middle of the projects. Some of our students have more difficulty than others getting to school on time. Of our school population, from September to March, there were 85 students who were tardy to school ten or more times.

My Project

This Donor's Choose request is to purchase alarm clocks to distribute to some of our chronically late students. The idea of this project is to create a class, to be taught by our administration, that will help provide our chronically late students with strategies and methods to get to school on time. Curriculum will include: how to read a bus schedule, setting an alarm clock, and planning time needed in the morning to prepare for the day. Chronically late students will be removed from their advisory course and enrolled in our special late intervention course. Participation will be mandatory in this class until students are able to attend school on time. Students who will receive the alarm clocks are those that truly have least amount of support at home and least ability to get to school on time independently.

My students need to learn responsibility, they need to understand that school is their job, and that they can not just be late because they overslept. This project will help students prepare for the work world, where such excuses simply are not acceptable. My school is trying as much as possible to help our students realize that they have power to improve their lives--- this project is an important step in that direction, it empowers students!
