I teach in high poverty area in the South Bronx. My school is located in one of the poorest Congressional districts in the country. Budget cuts are nothing new to the NYC public school system, however, this year things are getting really tight. My school is out of copy paper. As a social studies teacher, who does not rely on a textbook, I make a lot of photocopies of texts and handouts for my students. I believe strongly in not relying on a textbook-- many of the readings I give my students I write myself. Writing my own texts has great benefits-- I can meet my students reading levels, I can focus content where I know they have gaps, and I can organize content in a kid friendly manner. However, this type of teaching requires a great deal of photocopies.
