My Students

Our pre-k students come from a small community located in the foothills of North Carolina. Many of our students and the students in our district come from low income, high poverty homes. Our students come from a large variety of backgrounds and are eager to learn about the world around them through literacy activities.

When we think about our students learning, we want to cultivate a love for literature and reading.

Story time is an important part of our day and our students enjoy this special time.

My Project

Our pre-k classroom is split up into various learning centers. Our learning centers include: home living/dramatic play, building, sensory, art, friendship, manipulatives, dance/music, reading, writing, and science. Our students get to move independently around the class and select where their learning takes place. Currently, our reading center has a comfy sofa, fun books, and reading buddies.

We would like to make our reading center more exciting and ready for learning by providing our students with various opportunities to hear stories through the use of a CD/tape/Bluetooth player and headphones.

Our students would be able to pick and listen to their own stories independently. It is important to remember that our students are not reading independently yet. This is a developmentally appropriate why to get books in the hands of our students and listening to more words and phrases.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
