My students are 6th-8th grade gifted and talented boys and girls, bright, energetic, funny, creative, and often too critical of the person in the mirror, having been their own internal coaches since infancy. They are often high-maintenance, but wow, they the sharpest pencils in any box I've ever had the pleasure to work with. I love my students like my own kids, and I want to provide them with every possible opportunity to learn through movement.
In many ways, they act like really good defense lawyers, critiquing, analyzing, postulating, hypothesizing, and thinking (and over-thinking) a concept or idea to its end and back again, and this is a great thing because, with someone to push and guide and lead them, they can do amazing things.
'Self-starter' or 'Initiative' has been encoded into their DNA since birth. Winter strength and endurance training is essential, because our old rubber exercisers are worn and frayed, making them dangerous to use. All of my Middle School students will benefit from a safe Broomball set goals, and broomballs.
Broomball came into being as a game played by early 1900s Canadian street car workers. A small soccer ball, and real corn brooms were used. Eventually the game grew in popularity and moved down to the USA.
Hockey still has blades, either plastic or the classic wooden wedge, and both of those hurt the shin bones and other body parts.
Broomball utilizes sturdy foam bottoms, relying on quick footwork and tactical placement to move the broomball around and score.
Broomball will be a welcome respite to battle the icy winter doldrums we're locked into now, and children from every grade in our school will quickly learn the basics, and more advanced aspects of the game.
My students need a broomball set and a fiberglass goal. We will practice the fundamentals of hockey, how to defend a goal, the different shots and passes, and how to make strategic plays to defeat the defense. Teamwork, hard work, hustle, and a lot of fun will be the result of our newest school game.
