Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is considered a community school in NYC which means a school that does not screen out any applicants. We have students from very high-needs environments as well as students who are in temporary housing.

Despite our students being considered disadvantaged, many of them strive to find a way to achieve future success.

They aspire to better themselves and their families. Ultimately, we are trying to prepare them for college so that they can truly lift themselves out of their circumstances.

My Project

My students are mostly immigrants and coming from families who've never finished high school. I have a small group enrolled in an accelerated, Advanced Placement U.S history course. These are some of the hardest working students I have ever encountered. This particular section of the course moves at an exceptionally fast pace and is very challenging for all of the students. Nonetheless, they are determined to succeed on the AP exam and hopefully score enough to earn college credit. To that end, we need a good review resource. I have requested the Crash Course review books for AP U.S. History as I have gotten good feedback from students in previous years. These will help the students organize the massive amounts of information and evidence for all the periods in U.S. History that they are required to understand and study. The books are for them to use in class and at home. In addition, the pens were recommended by national AP scorers to be the best quality for writing and reading essays. Students will use these exclusively for all their essay writing and for exams. Finally, the whiteboard erasers are necessary for group review sessions (in conjunction with individual whiteboards for students to use). Students use these to quickly write responses to review prompts. They need to be able to erase and rewrite quickly. The items I requested for this project were the best rated. Ultimately, I want my hardest working students to have the best. They deserve it for all their motivation and determination to succeed.
