Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth-grade teacher of all subjects in Brooklyn, New York. The school in which I teach is a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood. All of my thirty students are English-language learners. Many of their parents only speak Spanish at home and cannot help them with their homework or read to them.
Due to the language barrier, many of my students were only exposed to the English language when they began kindergarten. Most of the children are very poor spellers and do not use proper grammar in their writing. Unfortunately, most of my students are reading at a second- and third-grade reading level even though they are in the fifth grade.
These children have never had phonics instruction and grammar work. What we need are materials to use on a daily basis that can help build their phonics ability and awareness and grammatical skills. This is crucial for these students because after this year they will be off to middle school and at that point will not get the type of instruction that they need now.
For these reasons, I am requesting a variety of materials to help build these essential skills. These materials include a "Daily Oral Exercises" book with brief oral exercises and assessment tests; a "Fifth Grade Skills" book with essential language lessons and flash cards; grammar workbooks; reading comprehension workbooks; a "Coaching Comprehension" exercise book; and a variety of other workbooks and exercise books.
The resources that we are asking for will be used in the classroom every day and as homework assignments on a daily basis. The types of activities include grammar skills such as past and present tense, verbs, homophones, contractions and pronouns. Phonics activities that will help boost word knowledge are word games, making words, comprehension activities, and word blends and digraphs.
We would be truly grateful if you will take our proposal into consideration!
