Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want my students to be able to be informed consumers and develop the skills needed to tackle complex multi-step problems. This goal can best be accomplished through project-based learning. These materials will allow for a 2 week project-based clothing course as well as multiple projects in a Design Technology course.

Most of my students live locally in the South Bronx.

They are naturally curious, and are easily excited when they encounter something new. My students enjoy hands-on tasks and activities, and the opportunity to be creative. The vast majority of them aspire to attend college. We are one of three small schools on a larger campus. My school has a family feel to it, as many siblings and cousins attend the school together. My school also has a neighborhood reputation of being a close-knit, caring community, providing a strong education, and preparing students effectively for higher education.

My Project

I am requesting 8 beginner sewing machines and 1 pack of fabric scissors. Students will be able to use these materials in two different courses. They will have the option to take a two-week elective course where they will learn how to design and construct garments and manufacture a unique item (clothing or bag) from scratch. While learning to make the product, students will explore the ecological and societal implications of modern clothing manufacturing. Students in our IB Design Technology course will also be using the machines to make a variety of items while exploring the manufacturing process in greater depth. Ultimately, students in either course will learn how to use a sewing machine to carry out basic clothing repair and maintenance, as well as manufacture their own simple goods.

Students rarely get the chance to tackle authentic and creative projects.

Donations to this project will allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their skill for manipulating materials and carrying out creative, hands-on tasks. This project will also allow students to learn valuable skills that they can utilize later in life, such as tailoring and clothing upkeep, providing students with self-sufficiency and potential future career opportunities.
