Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a teacher at a low-income high minority school in Houston, Texas, where I have the pleasure to teach some of the greatest kids in the world. Because of their difficult financial backgrounds, a large portion of my students have never been out of the city of Houston, let alone the country. Regardless of this, they are still eager to learn and experience the world however they can.
Knowing that travel changes lives and broadens horizons, I hope to show my students that the world is open to them regardless of their family's financial backgrounds.
I sincerely believe that travel is life changing, and want to help my students experience that at a young age so they can see as much of the world as possible. To attain this, we've been engaging in fund raising, as well as family contributions. The funds from this DonorsChoose.org project will go directly to the costs of their travel, and help them see the world!
My Project
My students are hard working and intelligent, and I really believe that the world is open to them. After Hurricane Harvey, many of my students were displaced or struggled with temporary housing, personal loss, and instability. Despite all this, they still come to school excited to learn and work hard - I really believe I have the best students in the world. Working at a low income and high minority school in central Houston, a large number of my students have never left the United States.
This trip would allow my students to practice their French in Paris, to visit the literary haunts of some of their favorite authors, and to explore museums filled with some of the great art they've studied in school.
My students have spent time in class this year studying the themes prevalent in the work of The Lost Generation artists, and have excited to experience some of the literary haunts of the Hemingway, Fitzgerald, as well as visiting Espace Dali in Paris. This trip will lead to a final culminating project where students compile their research on the lasting legacy of these influential writers and the surrealist art movement.
