Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am lucky to teach art to every student in the building which adds up to more than 500 students in a high-poverty public school. This includes first through fifth-grade classes, including bilingual classes and self-contained special needs. We are 85% low income, resulting in all of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is located in a predominantly Spanish-speaking community with 50% of students being English Language Learners and 80% of students speaking Spanish at home.
My Project
I am looking to add new stools and bristol paper to the art room. Right now I have a variety of seating, some of which is not suitable for the art room or the age group of my students. Many have to sit on their feet to reach the tables to complete their artwork. I am asking for stools that are the correct height of my tables to fit my students needs.
I am also looking to bring new painting projects to my classroom.
Creating mixed media pieces with paint and clay require a stronger paper than traditional cardstock. I would like to use bristol board with my fourth grade students this year to create unique mixed media pieces based on artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Many of my students are English Language Learners from Mexico, so I hope teaching about Mexican artists will bring a strong cultural connection.
