Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine learning about Canada or trying to find Africa without ever holding a map in your hand. My students all share my one atlas when we are learning about different countries.

My bilingual first graders are from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Our Title One school struggles to provide as many basic necessities for our students as we can. My students have very little opportunity to travel, even within our own state, much less around the world.

My Project

When studying the Olympics this February I realized my students were fascinated by the larger world around them. We spent time studying Canada and Africa. However, we had only one atlas to look at the different countries and continents. I want my students to learn about the world beyond our community and state.

I want my students to have the opportunity to hold the world in their hands.

I want to study more countries and continents while I have my students' attention. I want my students to be able to look through the atlas, on their own, and choose the place they want to learn about next. I want my students to understand that there is a larger world out there to experience and explore beyond the borders of our community.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
