This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
During this time of uncertainty, my district does not have money to supply all items that we need for the students. Apart from teaching the curriculum, I like to supplement it with outside reading brought into the classroom.
Most of my Pre-K students come from low-income neighborhoods without a lot of exposure to the outside world.
Pre-K is the first experience of school for the majority of my students. My classroom is a happy and safe place for the students to experience what is out in the world. My students do not get the opportunities to get out of their neighborhoods often.
My favorite moments are when the students have lightbulb moments and are in awe!!
My Project
My students have used these in the years past. They get so excited when we sit down as a group to read through the magazines. I love the real pictures and the children get to examine them and find things of importance in them. I think that it lets the children relate better to their own worlds. It is also giving them practice of reading top to bottom left to right. The children can then take the magazines home and share them with their families. I have a lot of students that English is their second language. This also helps bridge the gap at home and let the parents help the children practicing their language skills.
