My students need a class set of the new book "Ghost Boys." This novel, written as fiction but including several non fiction historical references, is the perfect companion to the classic “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

My Students
My school and the town it sits in are like the phoenix. They rise even when everyone around them believes there to be nothing but ashes. Hope is a powerful ally!
The students in this school, often misrepresented, are kind, passionate, friendly, and they LOVE to learn.
History is one of their very favorite things to learn about, especially the history of the U.S., and how we became who we are today. They are fascinated by world events and love to debate.
My Project
Talking about racism and prejudice in our country is never an easy conversation. Although classic literature can certainly help that go a bit better, students often relate quicker to real time examples or historical names they are familiar with.
We are requesting multiple copies of "Ghost Boys," a new novel by Jewell Parker Rhodes, emphasizes some very controversial events in our present, while tying in names from our past.
With a focus on racism, lying, friendship, and family, Rhodes helps students understand the importance of communication and honesty with everyone, especially adults.
This novel will be the perfect follow up as we begin To Kill a Mockingbird, a book about racism and prejudice in the 1930's. Although I am a huge fan of TKM, and I believe students will truly enjoy the novel, I also know they would truly benefit from the lessons that "Ghost Boys" can offer as well.
