My Students

I teach at a public school in Boston, MA where the majority of our students are from economically disadvantaged homes.

I am an ESL Teacher and I work with students in grades 1-6 and this year my students are an exceptionally diverse group comprised of children from 9 different countries, speaking 6 different languages.

Even though we all speak different languages, are from different countries, and have different cultural backgrounds, we are able to come together daily and share our experiences with one another and most importantly learn from one another. All of my students are English Language Learners; some of them are newcomers and have just arrived, while others have been here for quite some time. Therefore, they are at multiple points in their acquisition of the language and culture.

My Project

A document camera would help my classroom immensely. Projecting student work will provide the opportunity for authentic and rich discussions based on students own ideas. Seeing their work live will give them a sense of pride and confidence. Students will become more engaged and motivated when aware that their work will be shared with the class. In addition to sharing work I can model reading strategies, note taking, and the writing process and I can do it efficiently and with better visual quality than my white board.

I can not stress enough how beneficial this small piece of technology would be for my students.

Learning a new language is extremely difficult and I want to do all that I can to give these young minds as much access to the materials as possible.

A printer will also help me print and scan their work allowing us all to have immediate access to learning materials.
