I teach at a public school in Boston, MA where the majority of our students are from economically disadvantaged homes. Additionally, the majority of our students are either immigrants or come from immigrant families. My class is an exceptionally diverse group of 4th graders comprised of children from 6 different countries, speaking 6 different languages. Even though we all speak different languages, are from different countries, and have different cultural backgrounds, we are able to come together daily and share our experiences with one another and most importantly learn from one another. As all of my students are English Language Learners understanding a classmates story or mathematical solution is not always possible. A document reader would allow my beginner students to have the opportunity to understand what is being presented with a visual representation projected by the document reader.
