Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have powerful work to share and I want them to have immediate access to the wealth of knowledge and ideas filling our classroom.

I teach at a public school in Boston, MA where the majority of our students are from economically disadvantaged homes.

Additionally, the majority of our students are either immigrants or come from immigrant families. My class is an exceptionally diverse group of 4th graders comprised of children from 6 different countries, speaking 6 different languages. Even though we all speak different languages, are from different countries, and have different cultural backgrounds, we are able to come together daily and share our experiences with one another and most importantly learn from one another. As all of my students are English Language Learners understanding a classmates story or mathematical solution is not always possible. A document reader would allow my beginner students to have the opportunity to understand what is being presented with a visual representation projected by the document reader.

My Project

A document reader would help my classroom immensely.Projecting student work will provide the opportunity for authentic and rich discussions based on students own ideas.Seeing their work live will give them a sense of pride and confidence. Students will become more engaged and motivated when aware that their work will be shared with the class. In addition to sharing work I can model reading strategies, note taking, mathematical concepts and I can do it efficiently and with better visual quality than my chalk board.

I can not stress enough how beneficial this small piece of technology would be for my students.

Learning a new language is extremely difficult and I want to do all that I can to give these young minds as much access to the materials as possible.
