My name is Jeanie Chong-Spellman. I am a first grade teacher in a title one school in Sunset Park Brooklyn. First grade is an amazing year in the life of a child. The child learns to read and write as they learn concepts in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. It is an enormous task my students take but they approach each day with wonder, and an eagerness to learn. This year our school tried to strengthen our science program by bringing many hands on materials. My students thrived as we experiemented and shared our findings. Many of our students come from home where little or no English is spoken. It is very hard for my students to talk about and share what they have learned with their parents. Many of my students ask if they can take our science textbook home. They want to have the book to illustrate the ideas they are learning in school. They want to reread at home in order to remember and reinforce new vocabulary and ideas they are forming. Unfortunately, I can not allow our textbook to go home. Currently we have only one book. I teach my lessons using the textbook as a read aloud storybook. We pass the book around but it never leaves the classroom, as there is only one copy. I would love to have a class set of First Grade science textbooks from Pearson Learning. These books are designed to introduce and build science knowledge in a very child friendly language. The book is rich in picture supports and lessons scaffold to build a deeper understanding. My students love science and have the desire to keep on learning after the school day ends. They just need access to textbooks that could travel home with them bringing science knowledge and wonder into their homes.
