Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a special education class of kinder through sixth graders. They spend a part of the day with me and part with same age peers. My classroom is in rural California and many of my students' families work in the fields of the agricultural industry.
My students, however, dream of being police officers, doctors, and teachers.
As economically disadvantaged and learning disabled students, the odds are stacked against them. The neighborhood where our school is located is notorious for gang violence and one in seven students is experiencing homelessness. School is one of the only safe places for our students. I also teach migrant children after school and work with home/hospital students who are too ill to come to school.
My Project
Many of my students lack the basic phonemic awareness skills to read and write even the smallest of words. Phonemic awareness is the ability to understand that words are made up of sounds in order to work with and manipulate those sounds. The phonological awareness games and curriculum will help me and my special education aides to run group rotations that will support the growing reading and listening skills of my students.
By developing their ability to understand sounds in language, my incredible students will inevitably learn that they CAN read and write, and find that reading is fun!
As they develop those skills, they will begin to develop their reading and writing skills, which are key to their continued success and independence in school and in the world. Thank you so much for your generosity in helping our students succeed!
