My students walk into our school library with excitement in their eyes. They can't wait to be able to let their imagination go wild in the library makerspace. You can see students taking apart and putting together computers, designing 3-D models, constructing structures, learning about circuitry, or playing board games.
The library has become a safe place where students have an opportunity to experience things that they can't access otherwise because of their socioeconomic background.
My school is a Title I school in Alabama that has a very diverse population of around 400 students. Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity that they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that will help my students create stop-motion scenes for stories they create.
My Project
A child's imagination is one of the most precious things that they have and, as an educator, I love to tap into that imagination and see just how amazing my students are. In the library, we do all kinds of hands-on activities such as learning about circuitry through Snap Circuits and Little Bits, architecture through Keva Planks, conductivity through Makey Makeys, and coding through Spheros and Ozobots. I would love to be able to bring that hands-on approach to literacy and writing.
With these Legos, my students will be able to let their imagination go wild by allowing them to create their own stories and then make them come to life through scenes they build with the Legos and then animate them through Stop-Motion.
This project will allow the library to step outside the box and give students a unique opportunity to explore their creativity and then making that creativity come to life, as well as allow other classes to utilize the materials for STEAM (STEM) projects.
