"History teaches everything including the future".-Lamartine My students ARE the future! In exploring the genre of historical fiction, I want to expose my students to their rich history so they are able to value and respect the present and the future they will create.
My students are the hardest working students in a violent, often tumultuous inner city in Maryland.
They often ride one or two mass transit buses to get to school each morning and face the perils of poverty, crime and violence. Despite these challenges, my students come to school everyday--and for an EXTENDED school day in order to prepare to climb the mountain to college. They show grit in pushing through challenges so that their future can be one of choices.
Having access to "One Crazy Summer" as our capstone reading unit, my students will be invited into a realistic, historical world in which they will surely be able to see themselves, despite the setting in 1968. They will feel as if they are experiencing the trials and tribulations of the Civil Rights Movement just like the engaging characters in the book. This beautifully written novel will surely transport them to a time and place that should not be forgotten.
Your donations will help students learn about and value their own history.
It will expose them to realities they may not have understood before and will allow them to understand the world around them in a much clearer, powerful way. This story will impact students as people and as learner, as they deeply explore a new literary genre...and their own history.
