I live to teach (and to read, truth be told). One of my greatest joys in life comes from watching student after student find a love of books during their time in my class. This happens every single year; actually, it happens every single day. Students arrive at my school, seeking a second chance for turning their lives around and getting back on track for graduation. Give me a year with them, and I watch them transform from shy, reluctant learners to forces of power to be reckoned with and students who are no longer sitting by, passively waiting for life to happen. Rather, they begin creating their bright futures right in my classroom.
Past struggles with substance abuse, teen pregnancy, homelessness, extreme poverty, gang involvement, or severe social anxiety slowly become a mere shadow of who they are, empowering them to consider, instead, who they want to be, who they can be.
My Project
This Fall will mark my 18th year in the classroom. Each year I listen to my students and take note of what makes my classroom a memorable, comfortable, welcoming place to learn. Early on my classroom looked like the classrooms from my childhood: desks in rows, textbooks stacked on cabinet tops, all awash in harsh lights and very little personality.
Seventeen years in the classroom has taught me that the atmosphere I create helps set the tone for learning before I speak a single word to students.
I am asking for help to bring more light and life to my classroom.
I am seeking funds to purchase LED lights for my bookshelves, lights to add to our classroom stage for performances, supplies for Open Mic celebrations of learning, and books of poetry to help breathe light and life into lessons all throughout the year. Your contribution will directly affect my classroom every single day of the school year, from Day 1 to Day 180. Already students walk by my room, pausing to peek in and to say, "Wow!" For many students, my classroom is home, and our "home" is in need of some updates. When teachers put time into creating special places for teaching and learning, students notice.
