Bringing Literature to Life From Home

Help me give my students exposure to different versions of favorite and familiar fairy tales so we can compare, contrast and write about them. A green screen will help me enhance and bring stories to life!

My Students

I have 17 curious kindergarteners! The majority of my students come to school with no prior school experience.

Many of my students face personal challenges at home, yet they are ready for school each day -excited and eager to learn!

My students are curious, hands-on learners. In our classroom collaboration and teamwork are key components of our day. Each child is each unique in their own way, but together they make an amazing team. They love to sing, dance and play! Through read aloud videos I try to bring a sense of classroom normalcy to their day. I need books to use for daily read alouds.

My Project

Read-Alouds are a great way to engage all types of readers, and they can be especially useful for struggling readers or students who are learning English. There’s the shared delight over favorite books that, momentarily, eclipses stress and fear. My students are still adjusting to a new reality sans classmates and playgrounds but Zooms allow them to peer into the life of another classmate who’s stuck at home like them. My scheduled livestreams, Zooms and recorded read alouds provide much-needed shape to parents and their children’s newly unstructured hours.

Reading aloud to children not only provides a bonding experience with classmates and me but the simple act of reading aloud to child 15 minutes a day for five years results in 27,375 minutes of language exposure which can put children on the path to high literacy achievement.

Reading aloud opens up the world to children, helping them build knowledge and vocabulary. As children’s brains are rapidly developing, one of the greatest gifts we can give them is our time reading aloud. My students look forward to hearing a book read aloud and a chance to discuss it with their friends. It’s something easy I can continue throughout the rest of the school year and Summer that will be engaging, meaningful and is an outlet for stress for all of us.
