I teach ELA and Social Studies to two classes of fourth graders who are eager to learn. My classroom is not just a place to learn. It is also a place where my students discover that they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch meaning they qualify for at least part, if not all, of the cost of their meals to be paid for by the district due to low parent income at home.
Many of my students come from low income homes and this can negatively affect their ability to learn successfully. My students come to school wanting to learn with a positive attitude about school no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard workers who want to do good things with their lives and they know it starts here in the classroom.
My Project
My students are in need of a class set of The City of Ember. This novel is an amazing story of how two children can change the world they live in by choosing to do the right thing.
Imagine growing up in a world where you have never seen the light of day.
This novel is about two kids who live underground, and supplies are starting to run out. They have to decide what to do to try help themselves and the others who live in the city, but are forced to make hard choices so they can do the right thing.
My students are being challenged to read all different genres of books both in and out of the classroom this school year, and this novel will help to get them excited about science fiction. Most of my students have never picked up a sci-fi book, and I am hoping, that by sharing one of the greatest books written with them, I can peek their interest in this specific genre.
