My Project

My honors sophomore English students spend the year exploring literature from around the world, learning how stories can help us understand cultures, experiences, and perspectives beyond our own. However, our current World Literature curriculum is underrepresenting an important part of the world: Latin America.

A class set of Yamile Saied Méndez's Furia will help fill that gap.

Set in Argentina, the novel gives students an opportunity to explore themes of identity, family, expectations, ambition, and perseverance through the perspective of a young woman pursuing her dream of playing soccer.

Adding Furia will also help my students consider what makes literature truly "global." As honors students, they will move beyond simply reading the story to analyzing how culture, social expectations, and individual identity shape the choices characters make.

Most importantly, having a class set means students can experience the novel with a physical book in their hands. In a school day increasingly dominated by screens, printed books give students an opportunity to slow down, annotate, discuss, and engage deeply with a shared text.

Your support will help us broaden our World Literature curriculum and ensure that Latin American voices have a meaningful place in our classroom.
