My Project

I have a very creative and fun-loving class this year. I would like to motivate my students to learn about historical events by providing them with costumes and props they can use to express what they are studying through role play. Activities include reenacting key moments in the historical periods we study throughout our curriculum. These props will allow students to show their understanding of key concepts through their listening and speaking skills rather than simply taking a pencil and paper assessment. Many students flourish when given the chance to express their learning through alternative methods such as acting. These props will also be used from time to time when students perform reader’s theater skits within our language arts units.

I am looking to improve student achievement in the Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.

This skill correlates to the Common Core Standard set for grade 5 students in the speaking and listening category (5.SL.4). Student data will be monitored through the use of rubrics. As we move forward using the Common Core standards I believe teachers need to look for innovative ways to make learning exciting and relevant to our learners. As I work to help our future leaders succeed, I feel it is important that they understand our country's history in great detail.
