It's hard for some children to imagine history beyond the pages of a textbook. They can’t easily picture the Boston Tea Party, life on the Western Front, or fighting as a solider in the Civil War! This is why getting into character and dressing up can be a powerful tool in helping children understand history. I would love to have various historical costumes from the colonial time period until the Civil War to make history come to life in my classroom.
Students learn best when lessons are engaging and memorable.
There is an element of stepping back in time and soaking up the time period that sometimes just reading about it or taking notes can’t do.
Dressing up as a way to study history is a fun and engaging way to help my students remember what they’ve learned. It can help tactile learners better retain facts, and have fun while doing it –– something a textbook by itself can’t always accomplish.
