Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at one of San Francisco's lowest ranking public schools, John O'Connell High School. I teach algebra and mathematics support to students who have been identified as needing extra math backgrounds. In order to make the math more "real" for them, I want them to fully visualize the concepts, to be able to interact with and manipulate their graphs. I am requesting funding for a magnetic white board and the supplies necessary so that I can create a permanent coordinate plane where students can create various graphs of the concepts we are studying. Presently, when we create graphs on paper, they are fixed and stagnant. If a student wants to change it slightly, a whole new graph must be created. However, if I had a physical board where students could pick up their graphs and move them changes and permutations could be seen immediately. Students would be able to manipulate the significant points, such as the vertexes, intersections along with the x- and y-intercepts, these terms would no longer be words that have very little meaning, but physical parts that have a distinct location. My classroom has only 1 large white board of which, one-third of the space is out of reach for my students as it is too high off the ground. Additionally, there is no space for me to have a permanent coordinate plane drawn with fixed grid lines. Having a separate, mobile magnetic white board would mean that I could write the lesson notes on the fixed white board and then move the coordinate plane up onto the chalk tray so that we could bring the lesson to life.
