Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in a large, Pre-K-8 school. Most, if not all, of my students come from lower income families. Many of these children face poverty, violence, and obscenities of life on a daily basis; that are well beyond what most of us could imagine.
Despite all of that, they come to school hungry for knowledge trying to do their best to learn as I try to do my best to give them a good education and an introduction to the American way of life.
We are looking to get families to get involved in activities after school as well as within the school day.
With limited resources, there are many things that others consider basic parts of education that I am unable to provide without the assistance of others. Many of my students do not come to school fed, let alone with the correct school supplies needed to succeed. Their parents are not able to supply them with simple school supplies.
My Project
The materials, a grill, utensils and grill cover, from this project will help bridge the gap that exists between the home and the school. Studies have shown that students with highly engaged families, achieve academically far greater than their peers. The engagement of families encourages academic achievement and makes learning a team effort. The innovative Social Emotional Learning (SEL) idea to get a grill to hold family events was created to entice families, while building student relationships and helping students with social-emotional learning. This program would feed my students and parents so that they would come together with teachers to create a community. Since there is a lack of parental involvement, it has hindered some students from learning to their fullest capacity. Building the bridge between the home and school will increase parental involvement inside and outside of the school, while making learning an exciting experience that they can share with their families.

The grill is a tool to help get families involved. We plan on feeding the families and holding activities that will be a fun, hands-on activity that helps parents understand what their student is learning and increase student understanding by having them share their learning. In addition, the grill help us hold Welcome Back to School Events, Autumn Harvest Events, Thanksgiving Events, Mother's Day Events, Father's Day Events, End of Year Events and many other socials throughout the year.
