I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.
Our students are superheroes!
Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle.
The 2021-2021 school year has been like no other due to the fight against COVID-19. Our seniors who are preparing to transition to 6th and 9th grade, know this fight very well. COVID-19 has put more than 6 feet of distance between friends, family, learning, and much needed supports.
Change for students with disabilities can be a deep disturbance.
So changes like the switch to remote learning due to COVID-19, has placed a cloud of unfamiliarity and stress upon our students' minds which has severely impacted the way they interact with their lives and others. Our seniors are struggling to move forward and take those few happy steps towards graduation. I see this struggle and want to use creative painting as a way to help our seniors decompress and express how they feel. Also, when done as a group activity, painting can help rejuvenate friendships and strengthen their sense of community. More importantly I want to help our seniors to paint a happier future for themselves.
My goal is for each senior to get a canvas bag filled with all the art supplies needed to participate in a school-wide virtual paint session. The paint session will focus on the idea of a "Brighter future" and how our seniors would like to see themselves in it. Please help me to hit our goal and move our senior’s thoughts from a space of uncertainty and into the beautiful hues of their future.
