Help my students combat loneliness within our community by contributing to its improvement. Our community is home to two distinct senior citizen centers and a personal care home. Many senior citizens feel isolated during holidays and throughout the year. To address this issue, my students will use various elements of art to design and send cards to senior citizens at the local personal care home in the community.
The student-created cards will be filled with positive messages, cheerful imagery, and warm sentiments, serving as a reminder to seniors they are not alone and that people care about them.
Equipped with paper, paint, markers, and stickers, my students, known for their kindness and compassion, will design original cards to be sent out each semester. To facilitate their creativity, a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used to purchase a drawing and painting unit. This unit will guide students in exploring the elements of art to craft unique designs for their cards. For instance, they will experiment with different color schemes to set the tone and use various types of lines to add texture and depth to their designs. A poetry unit will be purchased to assists students in composing six types of poetry, which will then be added to the cards to convey cheerful and heartfelt messages.
The goals of this program are to uplift the spirits of the recipients, spread joy and cheer beyond the holiday season, and provide students with valuable lessons in using art to positively impact their community. The students will also experience personal satisfaction in the act of sending cards, knowing that they are contributing to a tradition that spreads happiness and goodwill. Through this project, they will also cultivate a spirit of service, learning to solve problems and extend kindness within their community.
