My Project

MY STUDENTS

My 8th graders come to English class every day carrying real burdens and challenges that stand in the way of learning.

But they also come with tremendous potential. Many read below grade level, and for a lot of them, books can feel like something done to them rather than chosen. But give them a story with an honest voice, one that doesn't talk down to them, and they light up. I've seen it happen during our daily read-aloud, and I want to build on that momentum.

MY PROJECT

This year, my students are studying personal narrative and memoir, learning how a writer shapes a real memory into a story worth reading. I want to bring that study to life with a class set of "Brown Girl Dreaming," Jacqueline Woodson's National Book Award-winning memoir in verse about growing up Black in the 1960s and 70s South and North.

I plan to read this aloud during our daily 10-15 minute read-aloud time, with every student following along in their own copy. Told in short, powerful poems, it's an ideal read-aloud text: each day brings a complete, vivid moment, and students can see the exact craft moves we study in class, including focus, voice, and how small details carry big feelings.

A class set means every student holds this story in their own hands, hears it read aloud, and follows along, a proven way to build reading fluency. For many, this may be their first time encountering a book that speaks so directly to their own search for voice and belonging.
