Hey! I'm a Physical Education teacher at a public elementary school in Brooklyn. Ms. Gorberg and I teach grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Having two Physical Education teachers and one gymnasium means two classes in the gym as once. We need enough equipment to occupy anywhere from 50-60 kids, in one room, in one period with maximum participation as possible. Our school population is very diverse. We have general education classes, ICT classes and self-contained classes in our school that we see throughout the day.
Help us get bowling equipment to teach our students bowling skills in order to get them ready for a school wide bowling trip.
My Project
On the first and second week of Physical Education, we ask our students what they want to learn and practice in class this year. We base our curriculum around what our students share during this discussion. This year, our students asked to learn to bowl. However, we do not have bowling equipment to make that happen.
We are asking for bowling carpets and bowling balls.
These mats will allow our students to learn how to set up the bowling pins in the correct formation, able to use to arrows on the mat to know where to release the ball and make gym class feel like a real bowling alley. We hope to go on a school wide bowling trip at the end of the unit.
The mats are a good way to differentiate our lessons. For those who need help setting up the 10 pins, they can now easily find the correct spot on the mat as the spots are marked off. For those advance players, they can use the arrows on the mat to work on a release for harder set up of pins.
Having our gymnasium feel like a bowling alley is a great motivational tool to keep the students actively engaged.
