Bringing Books Back to Kindergarten

My Students

I have an extremely diverse classroom with students ranging from no previous educational experience, to some who attended Pre-K.

Many of my students come from homes with very little parental support.

This makes my job even more important. For many of the kids, I am the only person who reads to them, encourages them, and makes sure they are safe.

I have a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch and several that are provided food to sustain them through the weekend.

They love coming to school and are happy and eager to learn.

My Project

My students don't get enough time with books. Our curriculum doesn't offer enough time for read-alouds. This year I've noticed a difference in my students not being read aloud to daily, as in years past. Because of this, my students have a lack of vocabulary and basic reading skills. Having books on CD would allow my students to be able to hear the read aloud during small group work stations. I know this would make a difference because my students hang on every word when they are read aloud to. This allows them to still have a read aloud, even when I'm not able to read to them. Through the stories the students will gain vocabulary, as well as provide reading skills as they are tracking the words and listening to fluent reading.
